The Rev. Alex Montes-Vela was born in Huacho, Peru, a town north of Lima. When he was seven years old, his family moved to Guatemala City, Guatemala, where his father attended seminary. Four years later they moved to Harlingen, Texas, and later McAllen, Texas, where his father lead two churches, before settling in Houston, Texas.

Before moving to Manor, Texas, Alex was an assistant priest at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Waco, Texas and the campus missioner (Episcopal chaplain) to college students in the Waco area, primarily Baylor University students.

Before attending seminary, Alex served as the music and youth director at Iglesia Episcopal San Mateo in Houston, and as the music director and lay priest assistant for the Spanish speaking congregation of Church of the Redeemer, Episcopal, in Houston.

Alex has a bachelor of science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Houston (1998), and a Master in Divinity from the Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Virginia (2005). Alex served as an enlisted member of the United States Army in field artillery, and participated in the first Gulf War, Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Alex was stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, Fort Stewart, Georgia, and Camp Casey, South Korea.

Alex is married to Thi (born in Vietnam), and they have three adult children: Alejandro Thanh (a middle school band director in Austin, and married to Lucy, a seminarian at the Seminary of the Southwest in Austin), Alissa Mai Thi, and Laura Huyen (both, middle school math teachers in Del Valle ISD, Texas).

 

El Reverendo Alex Montes-Vela nació en Huacho, Perú, una ciudad al norte de Lima. Cuando tenía siete años, su familia viajó a la Ciudad de Guatemala, Guatemala, donde su papá asistió al seminario. Cuatro años más tarde se mudaron a Harlingen, Texas y más tarde McAllen, Texas, donde su papá pastoreo dos iglesias, antes de hacer su hogar en Houston, Texas.

Antes de mudarse a Manor, Texas, Alex fue uno de los sacerdotes asistentes en St. Paul's Episcopal Church en Waco, Texas y misionero universitario (capellán Episcopal) a estudiantes universitarios del área de Waco, principalmente estudiantes de la Universidad de Baylor.

Antes de asistir al seminario, Alex sirvió como director de música y de jóvenes en la Iglesia Episcopal San Mateo en Houston y como director de música y asistente laico del sacerdote de la congregación de habla hispana de Church of the Redeemer, Episcopal, en Houston.
